EARTH is round. In 1616, Galileo think so. This opinion caused him despised by the church, who was convinced that the earth is flat and the center of the solar system. Heliocentric theory held by Galileo is considered wrong and contrary to the Bible. Because of that, he was punished by the church.
Such things never happened in the Islamic civilization. Although not explicitly explain the earth is round, but some verse implicitly describe it. For example contained in Surat az-Zumar, verse 5, which means: "He created the heavens and the earth with (destination) is true; He closed the night up in the day, and closing the day up in the night ... "
In this verse, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala uses the word "takwir" which means closing. In the Arabic language dictionary, this word is used to describe wrap or cover something, on top of the other in a circle, as 'turban' is applied on the head.
At-Tabari explains in his commentary that is, 'to wrap the night up in the day, and to wrap the day up in the night' is when the night comes, day went. Conversely, when daylight came, the night went.
Description of the day and night close to each other contains a precise explanation of the spherical shape of the earth. Therefore, if the earth is flat, the change of day and night on a regular basis will not happen.
Other verses contained in the Al Imran verse 27, which means: "You enter the night into daytime, and day into night .."
In connection with this verse, Ibn Abbas, Ibn Mas'ud, Mujahid, and Qotadah said that day and night were each entered. Daytime, have 15 hours longer than the night, while night had a 9 hour shorter than daytime. He also intends between day and night to replace each other. If one is missing, immediately replaced by another. (See commentary Qurtubi)
This statement is only true if the earth is round. The second verse above suggests that the shape of the planet earth is round. This proves that the Koran is always one step ahead of the discoveries of modern science today. Whenever there is a great discoveries in every century, it turns out the Koran already explained in advance.
